Frequently Asked Questions

What version of the Bible does the Bible Study Guide use?

The Bible Study Guide was set up so that it could be used with any version of the Bible. The Student Pages use the vocabulary of the New International Version, though other versions can be used with minimal difficulty.

Why does the Bible Study Guide not start with Genesis 1 and go straight through to Revelation?

There are several reasons we chose the order of study in the Bible Study Guide (BSG). First, in a detailed, four year study of the entire Bible, it would be nearly three years before we ever came to Jesus if we went straight through. With the BSG, we study some Old and some New Testament each year, examining part of Jesus’ life on earth each year as well. We feel that this approach is a better balanced way to study the Bible.

Also, the BSG outlines the Biblical history in the first thirty lessons of study, examining the lives of Joseph, Daniel and Jesus. This method gives students an overall idea of the story of the Bible very quickly. Then we proceed to fill in the gaps.

Finally, this order of study prevents both teacher and students from feeling bogged down in a certain section of Scripture for months at a time. Occasionally switching from Old to New Testament and back adds interest and excitement. You are continually exploring something fresh.

We should emphasize that the constant use of the Time Line helps students understand the chronology of the Bible better than any method we know of. The way the BSG program is set up, you are constantly being reminded of the “big picture” of the Bible and how the current lesson fits into it.

How do I decide exactly what I need?

If you are teaching a Bible class in a church or school setting, you will probably want to have all of the materials listed on the age level page that applies to your class. (For example if you teach ages 3-K, you will want a set of Beginner Student Pages for each of your students and teachers, one Beginner Time Line, one set of Children’s Songs and one Beginner Teacher Visual.) If you are teaching your kids at home, you will want, at a minimum, a set of Student Pages for each child that corresponds with their age level (the Primary level alone requires a Primary Teacher Guide). The other items are very helpful, but they are optional. The one item that is not practical for some home users is the Wall Maps and Time Line set. The visuals are large (the Time Line is 76″x 25″) and unless you have plenty of wall space or are willing to paste them onto sheets of cardboard and store them under the bed, you may decide it is necessary to just rely on the time line and maps activities found in the Student Pages. If you just get one visual aid in addition to the Student Pages, we would encourage you to purchase the Beginner Time Line (for ages 3-K) or the Bible Book Summary Cards (for the older ages). Your Student Pages will often refer to these visuals and you will find them incredibly helpful.

Do you promote sectarian doctrinal positions with the Bible Study Guide?

We are sometimes asked if we are owned or controlled by a particular denomination or if we teach various church doctrines. We work independently of any church group or denomination and make no attempt to teach opinions about issues of debate. Our goal is to present the Bible and the Bible alone. We believe that it is through the prayerful study of God’s word that people come to a true and lasting faith. Our prayer is that the Bible becomes an easily used tool in your hands and in the hands of your students, so that, through his word, God might communicate his will for your lives.

We believe what Paul said in his letter to Timothy: All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that God’s people may be thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17). We believe that the Bible is the word of God and is our guide for life.

We believe in the one true God who exists in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe that God sent his Son Jesus to earth, born of a virgin to live and die as the atoning sacrifice for all who would place their trust in him. We believe that Jesus rose from the dead and ascended to heaven where he sat down at the right hand of God the Father. We believe that he is present today, through the Holy Spirit, in his church, the body of Christ.
